The ISIS Children’s Foundation (ICF) was established in an urgent response to the trafficking of children from Humla to Kathmandu, during the political unrest in Nepal. Their mission is to ensure that Humli children have access to adequate education, to reduce the incidence of child trafficking in Humla and assist the Humli community to break the cycle of poverty.
As the war in Nepal had deepened, many families in the Humla region were being advised that one child from each family should join the Maoist army. As a result of this, and from fear for their children from the ongoing conflict, many children were being sent away to apparent safety in Kathmandu with distant relatives. We became aware of this situation and in particular of children who were living in horrendous conditions in Kathmandu.
Over several years we worked with the police and government to rescue over 139 children from two traffickers. We now support these children in Kathmandu and are working towards reunifying them with their families (some of whom have not seen their children in many years) and if possible, helping to repatriate them to their homes.
