The Himalayan Children’s Society (HCS) is a Humla-based organisation which believes that it should be the younger generation of Humlis who should decide the future of Humla. They want to work with communities to ensure that children can have a quality education in the mountains, so that if the children one day leave the hills for the cities, they will still have strong links back to their communities.
HCS is working with the Yalbang community in Upper Humla to develop the educational resources in the district, including providing housing for children, tutors and teachers, teacher training, initiatives to encourage families to enrol their children (particularly girls) in school, and resourcing schools. They are also supporting children who have left the mountains, through a Humli Tibetan Children’s home in Kathmandu.
